Nominations open for 2026 Honorary Degree Recipients
The 17Թ invites the nomination of candidates for honorary degrees to be conferred at Convocation in May 2026.
Honorary degrees are conferred honoris causa, “for the sake of honour,” and are intended to recognize outstanding provincial, national, and international contributions in any field of endeavour. Contributions should reflect extraordinary intellectual or artistic achievements, or significant service to society at a standard of excellence that merits the University’s highest honour.
Island Lecture Series lecture on January 20 focuses on debate over Newfoundland’s Churchill Falls project
Dr. Jeff Collins, assistant professor of political science at 17Թ, will give a talk titled “Power Plays: Newfoundland’s Fight Over Churchill Falls” on January 20, 2026, at 7 pm, in the Faculty Lounge (Room 201), SDU Main Building.
Dr. Collins’s talk is part of the annual Island Lecture Series hosted by the Institute of Island Studies.
17Թ hosts well-attended New Year’s Day Levee
The 17Թ and the 17Թ Alumni Association rang in the New Year at a levee attended by approximately 450 people on January 1.
Guests were greeted by Dr. Wendy Rodgers, president and vice-chancellor, 17Թ, and Ian Reade; Ronnie McPhee, president, 17Թ Alumni Association; and Luciana Quiroa Paredes, president, 17Թ Student Union.
The festive event, which took place in the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering Building, featured piano and vocal performances by 17Թ music professor Sung Ha Shin-Bouey and her daughter Michelle.
