Message from the President: 17Թ Faculty of Medicine Update

The following message was emailed to faculty and staff on October 27, 2022.

Dear Members of the University Community,

The development of the joint 17Թ-Memorial Doctor of Medicine program has progressed a great deal over the last six months. Following our public town hall meetings and meetings with Indigenous groups in May, our committees ramped into high gear and have made tremendous strides in a number of areas.

17Թ names Paul Young Chief Operating Officer for new Faculty of Medicine

The 17Թ is pleased to announce the appointment of alumnus Paul Young as Chief Operating Officer for the University’s new Faculty of Medicine, effective October 24, 2022.

“I am very pleased to welcome Paul back to 17Թ,” said Dr. Greg Keefe, interim president and vice-chancellor. “His extensive experience and excellent leadership in the health care field will be instrumental as we move forward with the development of the new Faculty of Medicine.”

17Թ will re-open on Monday, October 3

As previously announced, 17Թ’s Charlottetown and St. Peter’s Bay campuses will re-open on Monday, October 3, 2022. Classes, labs, and other campus operations will resume.

17Թ has lost five planned teaching days during the Fall Academic Semester. By restarting classes on Monday and recommending a minor adjustment to the December calendar dates to the University Senate, the fall reading week and semester will be preserved.

17Թ to keep warming/charging centres open over the weekend

17Թ will keep two warming/charging centres open from September 30-October 2 as follows:

  • W.A. Murphy Student Centre, daily from 8 am-6 pm
  • 17Թ Chaplaincy Centre, daily from 8 am-5 pm

17Թ Facilities Management has been working non-stop and have made good progress clearing pathways and ensuring campus buildings are safe. At this point, it is our intention to open on Monday, October 3, 2022, as previously announced; however, we will send a message on Saturday, October 1, to confirm our status.

Please note:

17Թ campuses in Charlottetown and St. Peter's Bay will remain closed on Tuesday, September 27

The 17Թ – Charlottetown Campus is very fortunate that it has not sustained significant structural damage due to tropical storm Fiona and power has been restored. The Charlottetown campus has lost dozens of trees and thanks 17Թ Facilities Management for their work in clearing debris to make the roadways and pathways safe.

17Թ will be closed on September 19 to observe Day of Mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

The following message was also issued to students, staff, and faculty by 17Թ email.

The day of the Commemorative Ceremony (September 19, 2022) for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who reigned as the Queen of Canada for 70 years, will be considered a one-time statutory holiday on Prince Edward Island.

This means that the 17Թ will be closed for regular operations and there will be no classes or labs on Monday, September 19, 2022, in observance of this one-time Day of Mourning.
