Local standout Ria Johnston commits to 17³Ô¹Ï Soccer
The 17³Ô¹Ï Women’s Soccer program has a gem on its hands.
Head coach Lewis Page has recruited local standout Ria Johnston, hoping to build a strong foundation that can help end the team’s seven-year playoff drought.
Page was drawn to Johnston’s ability to break down defences and create scoring opportunities for herself and her teammates. And after a season in which the Panthers scored fewer than a goal per game, the winger’s inclusion could be vital to the team’s success moving forward.
17³Ô¹Ï extends its condolences on the passing of SDU alumnus and 17³Ô¹Ï coach Jack Kane
The 17³Ô¹Ï Panther family and broader University community were saddened to learn of the passing of 17³Ô¹Ï Sports Hall of Fame member John (Jack) Kane on July 3, 2022.
Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017, along with other Saint Dunstan’s University (SDU) hockey icons including his father, Jack Kane Sr. (posthumously), Billy MacMillan, and Vince Mulligan, Jack Kane Jr. was an avid and gifted athlete who loved his family, friends, and those he coached, taught, and worked with.
17³Ô¹Ï faculty member awarded Christopher Knapper Lifetime Achievement Award
Dr. Shannon Murray, a professor of English at the 17³Ô¹Ï, has been awarded the Christopher Knapper Lifetime Achievement Award by the (STLHE).
STLHE created the Christopher Knapper Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002 to honour individuals who have made significant contributions to teaching, learning, and educational development in Canadian higher education. Murray received the award at the STLHE annual conference held in June.

The National Flag Football Championships for U16, U18, and U20 boys and girls competition will take place from August 11 to 14, 2022.
Ukrainian president addresses 17³Ô¹Ï students
On Wednesday, June 22, the 17³Ô¹Ï had the honour of participating in an interactive online event with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who delivered a live video address from Ukraine to students across Canada. 17³Ô¹Ï was one of nine universities on the Zoom call with President Zelenskyy, with approximately 50 students, alumni, faculty, and staff gathering in Lecture Theatre A at the Atlantic Veterinary College. Along with the in-person events across Canada, more than 6,800 people tuned into the live stream on YouTube.
2023 Canada Winter Games Torch Relay—Represent your community, become a torchbearer!
As a partner, a sports venue, and the Athletes' Village for the 2023 Canada Winter Games, 17³Ô¹Ï is excited, along with the Canada Winter Games Host Society, to promote the 2023 Canada Winter Games Torch Relay.
Prior to every Canada Games, a Torch Relay takes place that sees the Roly McLenahan Canada Games Torch travel part of the country as it makes its way to the host city/province for the opening ceremony. Ceremoniously lit from the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill, the Roly McLenahan Torch will ignite the official Games flame during the opening ceremony.

17³Ô¹Ï Co-operative Education Program presents annual awards
The 17³Ô¹Ï Co-operative Education Program recently recognized its exceptional students and employers with its annual awards, which included a new Arts Co-op Student of the Year Award. Students were nominated by their work-term employers, and employers were nominated by students who worked for them in 2021.
The recipients are Rahmat Buraimoh, Arts Co-op Student of the Year; MacKenzie Wright, Business Co-op Student of the Year; Elizabeth Toop, Science Co-op Student of the Year; and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Co-op Employer of the Year.
