A prominent American researcher in the field of addictions treatment is coming to Prince Edward Island to give a public talk, and to discuss ways of importing her web-based treatment methods to the Island鈥檚 healthcare system. Dr. Kathleen Carroll is a Professor of Psychiatry from the Yale School of Medicine. The public is welcome to her talk on Tuesday, October 7 at 6:00 pm in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium, room 242 of 17吃瓜鈥檚 Don and Marion McDougall Hall. Dr. Carroll is best known for her work in computer-based training for cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT4CBT, which has received multiple awards and recognitions for its success. CBT4CBT is being implemented within the U.S. healthcare system and has been shown in several sites to nearly double the improvement of treatment success for patients struggling with addictions. Dr. Carroll comes to Prince Edward Island as a guest of Dr. Juergen Krause, Dean of the School of Business and Director of 17吃瓜鈥檚 Centre for Health and Biotech Management Research (CHBMR). Dr. Carroll鈥檚 talk will offer more information about this new treatment option for Prince Edward Island and Canada, and will give the public an opportunity to ask questions to learn more.

Want to attend the virtual classroom event being led by Dr. David Suzuki? The David Suzuki Foundation, the National Film Board of Canada and Humber College on the intersection of food equity and environmental justice will host a live feed for 17吃瓜 students, staff, and faculty in the K.C. Irving Chemistry Centre, room 104 at 1:00-2:30pm on Monday, October 6. A panel discussion, led by Dr. David Suzuki, and streaming live from Humber to classrooms across the country, will examine the impact of modern farming practices on our health, land and food security. Suzuki will be joined by panelists J.B. MacKinnon, co-author of Canadian bestseller "The 100-Mile Diet", and Utcha Sawyers, from Food Share Toronto to discuss what we can do as individuals and as a nation to ensure that every person has the basic ingredients for a life of health and dignity. The event also features poet Tanya Davis, whose compelling poem is the backdrop for the NFB film "Island Green", a look at conventional and organic farming on Prince Edward Island. The film is the catalyst for the panel discussion. A screening of the 20 minute film "Island Green" will precede the live event at 12:30 and, if there is interest, will also follow the event at 2:30. Join artist Susan Christensen for an art show opening of the The Frank Ledwell Literacy Legacy Project in the Robertson Library, on Sunday October 5 from 2:00-4:00 pm. Susan was commissioned by the PEI 2014 Committee to paint ten original art pieces based on Frank Ledwell's writings. The ten paintings will be on display from October 5-October 31. This project celebrates the anniversary of the Charlottetown meetings in 1864 of the Fathers of Confederation. The stop at the Robertson Library will complete the tour of the paintings. At the end of the tour, the pieces will be made part of a permanent collection in the hosting libraries throughout PEI, including the Robertson Library at 17吃瓜.

Members of the public are invited to attend a free lecture entitled 鈥淢ink farming: Myths and realities鈥� on Friday, October 3, at 7:00 pm at the Atlantic Veterinary College, Lecture Theatre A. The talk will be given by Dr. Georgia Mason, Canada Research Chair in Animal Welfare, University of Guelph. The public lecture is part of the tenth annual Animal Welfare in Practice conference at AVC, which this year is focusing on mink farming, with reference to the new NFACC Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Farmed Mink 2013. Richard Wagamese, award-颅winning Ojibwa novelist, journalist, and memoir writer, will give a public reading on Monday, November 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. His new novel, Medicine Walk, which follows his best颅selling novel Indian Horse with its focus on Aboriginal hockey and residential schools, testifies to the redeeming power of love and compassion. Among his honours are the 2013 Molson Prize for the Arts and 2012 National Aboriginal Achievement Award for Media & Communications.
