National Indigenous Peoples Day
National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21) is a day that unites us in reflecting and recognizing the important contributions Indigenous peoples have made throughout history and throughout communities from across Canada. It is also an opportunity to listen and to learn from Indigenous Peoples, to hear their oral histories and traditions, and to reconsider the active role we all need to play to move forward.
James Voye named head coach of 17Թ Women’s Rugby
17Թ has named James Voye as the head coach of 17Թ Women’s Rugby. Voye is an award-winning veteran coach with experience at the high school, club, provincial, and national levels.
“We’re really pleased to make this official as James brings a wealth of rugby coaching experience at all levels,” said Jane Vessey, director of athletics and recreation for 17Թ. “We are very appreciative with how he has dedicated himself to the team. The time and effort spent on player development has been impressive”.
17Թ’s Dr. Marya Ahmed named a 2020 Emerging Scholar by the Canadian Cancer Society
Dr. Marya Ahmed, an assistant professor of chemistry at 17Թ, has been named one of 15 Emerging Scholars by the Canadian Cancer Society for her research to develop a dual-targeting strategy for the treatment of breast cancer. The award is valued at $600,000 over five years.
Virtual grant writing webinar
17Թ Research Services is hosting a virtual grant writing webinar on June 17, 2021, from 1 - 3 pm. This webinar is open to all 17Թ researchers across all disciplines. In addition, the 2019-2023 17Թ Strategic Plan outlines 17Թ’s commitment to identifying resources and supports to enhance institutional support to assist researchers in effectively identifying and pursuing research funding.
17Թ Faculty Association celebrates achievements of faculty members
The 17Թ Faculty Association celebrated the achievements of faculty members at an online event held in May of this year. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 17ԹFA was not able to hold its annual faculty recognition events in-person for the 2020–2021 and 2019–2020 academic years.

Join us on Friday, June 25, for a fun day of golf and activities at the 2021 17Թ Panther Golf Classic, presented by Stewart McKelvey. Tee times are available every ten minutes from 8 am–3 pm at Fox Meadow Golf Course in Stratford.
Your registration includes tee times for four golfers, power carts (two players per cart), a Panther gift for each player, a barbeque lunch, healthy snacks, and giveaways and events on the course.
Mood & Depression Essentials Session
This presentation provides a high-level overview of how mood impacts work. it takes a particular focus on depression in the workplace and guides participants through the Mental Health Works 3-gear method of addressing it. By the end of this sessions, participants will:
- Be exposed to an accessible and evidence based introduction to mood and depression
- Begin to see mood and depression in terms of balance and barriers
- Start to understand how to talk openly about depression.
Mental Health & Safety in Focus Workshop - 17Թ Employees
This presentation provides an introduction to workplace mental health and safety. It includes a high-level introduction to mental health awareness and responding to some common issues, as well as accommodation, return to work, and the National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace. By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
• Consider mental health and safety as an important part of overall health and safety.
• Better understand mental health and common mental health problems in terms of balance.
