International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on March 21, the day in 1960 when the police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid "pass laws." The 2026 theme for the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is "Mobilizing Political Will."

Faculty of Arts presents the Thane A. Campbell Lectureship in Law

The Chief Justice Thane A. Campbell Lectureship in Law will feature a presentation titled “Human-Centered Knowledge Work in the Age of AI†on Monday, March 30 at 4:30 PM at the Charlottetown Library Learning Centre in the Rotary Auditorium. The lecture will be delivered by Al Hounsell, Senior Director of AI, Innovation, and Knowledge at Gowling WLG.

Tentative agreement reached with IBEW 1928

The following statement was also emailed to 17³Ô¹Ï faculty and staff on March 11.

After a day and a half of bargaining earlier this week, 17³Ô¹Ï has reached a tentative agreement with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW 1928). The tentative agreement is subject to ratification by both parties.

We appreciate the dedication and professionalism of both bargaining teams in their work to reach a timely agreement, and the respectful and constructive manner in which they approached the negotiations.

17³Ô¹Ï celebrates new undergraduate program in Indigenous Studies

The 17³Ô¹Ï marked another step forward on its journey of reconciliation at an event held on March 4, 2026, to announce a new undergraduate major in Indigenous Studies.

Starting in the Fall 2026 semester, the major in Indigenous Studies will be offered by the Faculty of Indigenous Knowledge, Education, Research, and Applied Studies (IKERAS). Those who complete the program will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Indigenous Studies.

New Director of EDI and Human Rights appointed

I am pleased to share the news that, after a national search, Sula Levesque has been appointed to the position of Director of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion (EDI), and Human Rights. Currently serving as Human Rights Resolution Specialist with 17³Ô¹Ï’s Department of EDI and Human Rights, Sula will begin her new role on March 30, 2026.

17³Ô¹Ï extends condolences upon the passing of honorary degree recipient Catherine Hennessey

The 17³Ô¹Ï extends condolences to the family and friends of Catherine Hennessey (17³Ô¹Ï LLD ’87), well-known PEI heritage activist, who passed away on March 3, 2026, at the age of 92.

Born and raised in Charlottetown, Hennessey was a passionate trailblazer in the preservation of heritage and history on PEI. In 1970, she founded the PEI Heritage Foundation, now the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation, and served as executive director until 1980. Subsequently, she served on Charlottetown’s heritage review committee and its City Council.
