Island Lectures Series January Lecture: Focus on Ireland

The January Island Studies Lecture is Tuesday, January 17, at 7:00 pm in the Faculty Lounge of 17吃瓜鈥檚 SDU Main Building, featuring graduate student Erin Rowan speaking about her research on 鈥渋slandness鈥� in Ireland. She will be joined by Eoin O'Beaglaoich, a visiting lecturer in Irish culture and language at 17吃瓜 and musician in residence at Holland College. Last spring, Rowan travelled to County Kerry in southwest Ireland for a six-week research trip. While there, she conducted interviews in Cahersiveen and Valentia Island, as well as visited libraries and archives around the county and country. Her research explores a dark time in Irish history, the Great Potato Famine (1845-1852), and how this period was felt and experienced by the people of Valentia Island and Cahersiveen. The subtle differences in famine experience between these two places demonstrate the effects of islandness and peripherality on this important period in Ireland's history. O'Beaglaoich is from the Dingle Peninsula in West Kerry. This area was also deeply affected by the hardships of the Famine. He will share a story or two from the folklore of the region. Rowan is a Master of Arts in Island Studies student at 17吃瓜. Her interests include history, islandness, and travel. Her research is sponsored by the Ireland Canada University Foundation's James M. Flaherty Scholarship, an organization committed to fostering connections between Ireland and Canada.  O'Beaglaoich is an Irish scholar and musician. International Student Orientation

The staff of the International Relations Office (IRO) would like to invite all new international and exchange students to take part in a special International Student Orientation on Saturday, January 7th, 2017. This one-day orientation is tailored specifically to meet the needs of our international student body. ISO is a fantastic opportunity to make new friends, meet the IRO staff and receive important information. Topics covered at the orientation include: the weather, social events, health insurance, study and work permits, finances, academic help, and the bus system. Plus, there is food and fun! Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys Feast Day Mass

She has been called "The First Public School Teacher in Canada". Marguerite Bourgeoys taught European and First Nations children together beginning in 1658 in Ville Marie. She died on January 12, 1700 and was made a saint by Pope John Paul II on October 31, 1982. Her spirit continues in the many schools across the country named Saint Marguerite Bouregoys, in teachers and in her sisters and associates in The Congregation of Notre Dame, Sister Sue's religious community. A simple snack will follow.

Open Pages Returns for 2017 with Jane Ledwell

This month鈥檚 edition of 鈥淥pen Pages鈥� at 17吃瓜鈥檚 Robertson Library happens Wednesday evening, January 18, at 7 pm and highlights the book Bird Calls, featuring poems by Jane Ledwell in response to a travel essay by Isabella Lucy Bird - "The Englishwoman on an Island" - published in 1856. Open Pages features local authors speaking about their books: what inspired them, what they learned, what they shared. The public is warmly invited to this evening, which takes place in the common area on the second floor of 17吃瓜. Light refreshments will be served, and books will be for sale, and signing by the author.

Men's Hockey Alumni Night

17吃瓜 Men's Hockey Alumni Panthers will return to the ice for a friendly 4 team scrimmage on January 21st prior to the Men's Hockey game against SMU later that night.  There will be a pre-game presentation of the alumni and a ceremonial puck drop as well as a VIP area in the MacLauchlan Area lobby reserved for these special 17吃瓜 alumni and their guests.

FREE Movie Screening: The Corridor

North of 49 Movies on Campus is a series of Canadian movie screenings on campuses across the country with support from Telefilm Canada and in PEI, the Atlantic Film Fesitval Trailer:  Facebook Event: Students, Staff, Faculty, and Community Members are welcome to attend. The film is free, and there will be free snacks, as well as draws for prizes! Wayne Carter, the Executive Director of the Atlantic Film Festival will be coming to 17吃瓜 from Halifax to introduce the film and give a Q&A after! The story follows a group of young male friends attempting to deal with one of their number鈥檚 mental health difficulties in the wake of his mother鈥檚 death. A wintertime spell in the family cottage, meant to scatter the ashes and build a new start, becomes the staging ground for some mind-bending occurrences that bring in questions of sanity, masculinity and violence echoing landmark films such as DiPalma鈥檚 Carrie and Tarkovsky鈥檚 Stalker.
