The Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), 17³Ô¹Ï (17³Ô¹Ï) is seeking applications from interested DVM students to work as Student Assistants in the VTH during the summer months, between May and August 2026.  There are up to 6 positions available in the Small Animal ICU & ER, or the Large Animal Hospital Services.

Please note: This competition will also be used to create a casual list for the 2026/2027 Academic term for students interested in working as casual student assistants in the VTH beyond summer 2026.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Positions are available in the following roles with their responsibilities described below each position.  All positions are full-time (averaging 40 hours/week).  Positions would run from mid-May 2026 to mid-August 2026 (finishing prior to the start of the school year) and involve a rotating schedule that includes evenings, overnights, weekends and statutory holidays.

SA ICU/SA Primary Emergency (4 positions)

  • Working with the ICU & Primary Emergency teams to support patient care of critical patients in the SA ICU, and support the triage, patient assessment, and care of patients with the Primary Emergency Service
  • Assisting with patient care and client communication
  • Helping to maintain infection control practices within the hospital and high standards of cleanliness and animal husbandry

LA Float (2 positions)

  • Assisting in a variety of LA hospital services, including LA Medicine, LA Surgery and Theriogenology
  • Assisting with patient care and helping to maintain infection control practices within the hospital and high standards of cleanliness and animal husbandry
  • May also include assisting with field services - AES and Farm Service

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a 17³Ô¹Ï student, with preference given to candidates who are currently enrolled in the DVM program
  • Must be able to commit to work in a full-time capacity for the duration of the summer period
  • Previous veterinary clinical experience preferred
  • Must possess a strong work ethic and accountability with good written and verbal communication skills

In your application, please detail any veterinary clinic/hospital experience you have and your comfort level with the duties described, including those in treatment areas, small animal emergency & ICU services, and large animal clinical services. Please also detail your prior commitments, if any, during the summer 2026.

Priority will be given to 17³Ô¹Ï students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and the Procedures manual.
