The Institute of Island Studies at 17吃瓜 will host a public lecture titled 鈥淲hat鈥檚 Law Got To Do With It! Islands and their status in international law鈥� on September 13 at 7 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building. 

Part of the Institute鈥檚 Island Lecture Series, the talk will be presented by Donald Rothwell, a professor of international law at the ANU College of Law, Australian National University, Canberra, Australia. 

鈥淭he legal status of islands has increasingly become contested in various parts of the world as a result of the distinction between islands and rocks, and the increasing development of artificial islands. Can international law resolve these issues or just make them more contentious?鈥�

Born on the island continent of Australia, Rothwell is a graduate of the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary. He has lived on Vancouver Island and studied islands and the law of the sea for 30 years.
