In a joint release issued late Thursday night, the 17吃瓜 and U SPORTS, the governing body for university sport in Canada, announced the cancellation of the 2020 U SPORTS Women鈥檚 Hockey Championship.

The decision was prompted by Hockey Canada, which announced earlier that all sanctioned hockey activities were being cancelled effective March 13. The U SPORTS University Cup, the men鈥檚 championship taking place in Halifax, was also cancelled.

Event convenor and 17吃瓜鈥檚 Director of Athletics and Recreation Chris Huggan said, 鈥淥n behalf 17吃瓜, we are so disappointed that the participating teams will not have the opportunity to complete the 2020 Women鈥檚 championship, but we understand the reasoning behind this heart wrenching decision.

He added, "I want to extend my thanks to all of our fans, volunteers, and sponsors who supported us throughout the season and for this event. We are saddened that our own 17吃瓜 Panthers didn鈥檛 get an opportunity to play on this national stage, but know this decision was made with the best interest of all participants in mind.鈥�
