Panthers at Home, September 18 to 22
17³Ō¹Ļ varsity teams are busy at home on the turf, ice, and basketball court this week. Here is your Panthersā home schedule for September 18 to 22.
Wednesday
The 17³Ō¹Ļ womenās hockey team is preparing for another big season, including hosting the 2020 U SPORTS Womenās Hockey Championship. Coach Bruce Donaldson is watching his team come together Wednesday in an exhibition match against Mount Allison University. The puck drops tonight at 7in MacLauchlan Arena.
āWeāre excited to hit the ice and get some true game action under our belt,ā said Donaldson. āWe will only be dressing nine forwards, as we have a full exhibition schedule, and this will give the coaching staff an opportunity to evaluate individual players and possible line combinations. Mount A always comes to play hard, so itās a great test for our opening exhibition.ā
Thursday
Thursday evening is a great opportunity to get a sneak peek at the 2019ā2020 Panther menās basketball team, as coach Darrell Glenn divides his squad in two for the annual Green & White game. Glenn is very excited about the upcoming season.
āThis year's Panther team will look very different than last yearās group,ā he said. āWe have added depth and size to our front court, and our back court will feature more speed, athleticism, and toughness.ā
Saturday & Sunday
The weekend belongs to the ābeautiful game,ā as the men and womenās soccer teams each host a pair of games on the 17³Ō¹Ļ Turf Field. On Saturday, the teams take on Memorial University. The women play at 1 pm, and the men at 3:15 pm. On Sunday, the Panthers host UniversitĆ© de Moncton at 1 pm and 3:15 pm.
āAt this stage, weāve got to take care of our fundamental basics,ā said Glen Miller, coach of the 17³Ō¹Ļ womenās soccer team. āWe need to up our energy and our decision-making skills and be willing to lay it all out there. Itās AUS ball: tough, physical, and smart. Winning is a choice, and thereās a very good chance of winning the game if you win the one-on-one battles.ā
Lewis Page, coach of the menās soccer team, is looking for some all-important wins at home early in the season.
āThis weekend should be two fast and exciting games,ā said Page. āMemorial is always a fiercely competitive team, and we have a long-standing rivalry with Moncton. 17³Ō¹Ļ menās soccer will be looking to continue to make winning our home games a high priority.ā
