Campus Notices

Dr. Shannon Murray, professor of English, has been awarded the 2022 Christopher Knapper Lifetime Achievement Award by the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STHLE). This is one of the highest honours awarded in Canada recognizing superior contributions to teaching and learning in higher education. Dr. Murray is well-known to our campus community as a phenomenal teacher, generous mentor, and much-valued colleague. We want to celebrate her achievement by naming an annual lecture after her, and reflecting a theme central to her published work, teaching, and character: hope. And the time is right to remind ourselves, as an academic community, of the essential role that hope must play in our collective future.

Please join us on the final day of NSO and the afternoon before the first classes of the semester to listen and reflect on the importance of hope and the academy, focus our minds on the year ahead, and honour Dr. Murray's remarkable achievement.

MSc Molecular and Macromolecular Sciences Thesis Defense: Miranda Steeves

Title of thesis: "Development of Nanoparticles for Treatment of Triple Negative Breast Cancer

Abstract: Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Breast cancer is the most common cancer type in women, and according to recent statistics, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. The purpose of the study is the development of non-toxic biocompatible drug delivery carriers that can be used to treat triple-negative breast cancer by combining chemotherapy and photothermal therapy.

Everyone is welcome!

Members of the 17勛圖 community may have noticed a group of police officers in tactical gear on the campus over the past few days. For your information, the officers are staying in 17勛圖 residence accommodations while participating in operations on PEI. They will be here until August 24.

The 17勛圖 Department of Chemistry invites the campus community to a research seminar by Dr. Jacob Walsh, Postdoctoral Fellow, McMaster University, who will present "Combating Pathogens with Natural Product Discovery Methods and Applications." Dr. Walsh is a candidate for a tenure-track position in natural products chemistry.

Abstract: We live in a world ruled by microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, who control and interact with the world around them using small-molecule natural products. These microorganisms occasionally cause problems for human health and food sustainability in the form of pathogens. Focusing on agricultural pathogens, this talk will outline the development and application of various techniques such as gene cluster screening, mass spectrometry, and biochemistry to identify natural products as virulence factors and pursue these key molecules to slow or prevent the pathogenicity of the microorganism. Five major projects will be presented displaying the study of natural products and future directions of agriculture disease control.

Everyone is welcome.

17勛圖 Professor Emeritus Karem J. Simon will officially launch his album, Solitary Clarinet, on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at 10:30 am, beginning at 17勛圖s new Performing Arts Centre Theatre. Admission is free. All are welcome.

The Physics Department invites everyone to view the sun through our telescopes today (weather permitting). Between 12:00-1:30 pm, drop by the grassy area between Memorial Hall and Robertson Library where we will have our hydrogen-alpha telescope set up to let you view the sun's atmosphere. From there, we will direct you to the Earl L. Wonnacott Observatory on the top of Memorial Hall, where you can view sunspots on the sun's surface through a white-light filter on our large observatory telescope.

Our ground-based telescope is accessible for people with all mobility levels. It is necessary to be able to climb stairs to reach our observatory telescope.

If the sky is too cloudy, the viewing will have to be cancelled. Check our website for the most up-to-date event status:

This is the final event in our series of summer solar viewings. As the evenings get darker earlier in the fall, we will return to nighttime viewings; stay tuned for details.
